Join the NYC Math Team

Students

Are you interested in math and problem solving? You can easily get involved at your school. Here are a few things you can do to get more involved.

All of these can help to prepare you better for more challenging competitions and to hopefully, one day, be a member of the NYC Math Team. More importantly, they give you opportunities to meet other students who are also interested in math and problem solving.

NYC Math Team Eligibility

To be eligible, students must live and attend school (public or private) within the five boroughs of New York City. Students forfeit their eligibility by attending competitions as part of other teams from outside of NYC. For example, if a student were to attend the ARML competition as a member of the Bergen County Academy team, then they would not be eligible to be selected for the NYC Math Team. Students may attend competitions as part of their school’s team without jeopardizing their eligibility for the NYC Math Team.

NYC Math Team Membership

Members of the NYCMT

Students are only officially considered members once they have been represented the NYC Math Team for at least one competition such as PUMaC, HMMT, NYSML or ARML.

NYCMT Practice Squad

Students who represented NYC at NYSML or ARML in the prior year will be automatically invited to join us for our regular Friday practices throughout the fall semester. Other students may also be invited to join us for practices, with the goal of one day being selected as a member of the team for a competition. Students who have only attended practices (but no competitions as part of the team) are not yet full members of the team.

New Student Selection

Selection for new students is done in the Spring of each year for the NYSML and ARML competitions. To be considered, students generally have participated in some competitions, such as the AMC 10/12. Many students who are on the team have qualified for AIME, though this is not a requirement nor is it a qualification. Recommendations for the team are gathered from coaches at schools across the city. If your school does not officially have a math team, you can you can email the coach of the NYC Math Team using our contact form. If your school does have a math team, you should be a member of it to be considered for the NYC team. If you are unsure whether or not your school is on our mailing list for coach recommendations, feel free to email us and ask. Recommended students may be asked to participate in a tryout.

Returning Student Selection

Returning NYC Math Team students will be considered for the more competitive college competitions. To be eligible, they should continue to be in good standing with their school’s math team. Regular attendance at Friday practices is expected. Students are also expected to complete the assigned Homework Problems. Apart from attendance and homework completion, performance at previous competitions as well as on NYC Math Team playoffs will be taken into consideration when selecting teams. Other factors may also be involved as the Head Coach strives to create the teams that will be cohesive, collaborative, and competitive. All team selection decisions are ultimately made by the Head Coach at his/her discretion.
